Recession has taught me a great deal. That is a blessing of hard times. I once found it very difficult charging people for my skills and talent. Are you also in that trap. You are just too nice and too good to do that. You want to be ‘Mr Nice Guy’, you want people to love you. Yeah that is noble but your bills are looking at you in the face and you are dying in silence while trying to please few people.
Now this is the deal breaker, when the next friend/customer comes, charge him or her. If he or she refuses to pay, move on and look for the next customer. While waiting for the next customer, do yourself a big favour, hone your skills. Why you don’t charge or scared to do is because you have not honed your skills. You have the talent but people don’t trust you yet.
The moment I started charging fee, I know I can’t afford to do crappy
jobs. I charge people for writing CV, cover letters, company documents,
blog post etc. I have been earning money on the side. I started out
charging reasonable fee but now I charge unreasonable fee because I know
the time and effort I put into these work
Every rich man or woman you know or adore, charge for their talent. So if you want to remain broke, continue the Mr Nice guy syndrome

Thanks so much for this writeup, I saw your blog on Emeka Nobis Pen & Ink Masters group on facebookand I love your advice. A lot of times in the past I find myself not knowing how to ask or feeling shy to ask because I feel they will go away. Now I know better. Great job.
